We all have aspirations in life, but many of us struggle to achieve them for one reason or another. Maybe we’re too scared to put ourselves out there and risk failure, or perhaps we don’t know how to make our dreams a reality.

If you want to change the trajectory of your life it’s never too late to achieve your dream goals. But you do need to take action.  

Setting goals is a great first step in the right direction toward success. Goals give you something to aim for, focus your energy on what’s important, and measure progress over time.

But what if you aren’t exactly sure how to set goals and achieve them successfully? Well… read on! In this blog post, I’ll share some effective strategies to help you achieve your ambitions more effectively than ever before!

1. Don’t Just Dream it – See it!

Rather than jotting down plans like “buy a house by 30,” or “retire at 50,” attempt to picture exactly what you want your future to look like and plan it out as thoroughly as possible. So this action is to visualize your ideal future…

Be specific, for example

  • Study affiliate marketing and create a successful online business that supports overseas travel. Visualize: See yourself wandering around the heart of Paris!
  • Pay off my house and buy a vacation property in a dream destination. Visualize: See yourself sitting on the deck looking out over the ocean.
  • Get fit and healthy by joining the gym and playing basketball. Visualise: See yourself happy and healthy.

When you can truly see the details of your perfect future, you’ll have the clarity you require. How to set goals and achieve them successfully serves as a foundation for achieving the sort of greater future you desire.


2. Write Down Your Goals

Put pen to paper and write out your goals instead of speculating about them. This gives your goals a more tangible shape and makes them seem more genuine.

Dr. Gail Matthews of the Dominican University of California conducted a study that demonstrated the benefit of setting down goals. According to her research, those who write down their objectives have a greater likelihood of achieving them than people who don’t.

As a result, it’s ‘visible’ to you, and you manage your life appropriately. So the action here is to buy yourself a book and start writing down your goals.


3. Break Down Your Goals

Aspirations are generally long-term and abstract, so break them down into smaller chunks to make them more digestible. 

Make a “goal ladder” by placing your main goal on the top level. Move down the remaining ladder levels, and note the smaller goals you’ll need to achieve to reach your primary goal.

Let’s focus on an example of how to set goals and achieve them successfully by breaking them down. Let’s say you’re trying to save money…

  • Over a month, write down/figure out all of the areas where you spend money (or several months).
  • After taxes, write down how much money you make each month.
  • You’ll need to save $333 every month to save $1,000 in three months.
  • Examine all of your spending habits to see where you can save money.
  • Determine whether there are any possibilities for you to generate extra money in the coming months if that’s possible.

Although the list may appear daunting, keep in mind that you don’t have to complete all of the tasks at once. It’s critical to master the art of concentration if you want to achieve your goal.


4. Keep Your Perspective

It’s easy to be fixated on achieving your goals. You may feel that you would go to any extent to attain your goal.

This, however, may result in exhaustion and, in the worst-case situation, abandonment of your goal.

Burnout may be avoided by leading a balanced life. Take one step back from your plan and look at the big picture. Take time and be kind to yourself.

5. Do Reverse Planning

How do you know what you want if you don’t know what you want?! Sounds crazy but here’s the strategy…

Simply work backward to know how to set goals and achieve them successfully, by outlining exactly what you want to achieve, even if it’s in a rudimentary shape.

Work out and define your 90-day objectives. What do you want to achieve by that date? Then evaluate and revise them on a regular basis, as you progress.

Well-defined goals are more feasible and do-able. Also have a variety of goals, such as financial, strategic, relational, and personal goals.

The following is how it works

Step 1: Make a list of your primary goal. What are your exact goals, and when do you aim to reach them?

Example: The goal is to launch and start my own website.

Step 2: Then, to attain your ultimate objective, ask yourself what milestones you need to fulfill immediately before that goal. What must you do, and when must you do it, to achieve your ultimate goal?

Example: Before officially launching the website, I should complete my testing for the website.

Step 3: Then go backward again. What do you need to finish before you reach your second-to-last goal?

Example: I must have all the visual elements for my website. I will define these visual elements from the ground up. 

Step 4: Go backward. What must you do to ensure that the preceding objective is met?

Example: Before creating visual elements, I must have finished creating content for the individual pages to be displayed on my website. I should practice search engine optimization (SEO) and keep each page focused on a single topic.

Step 5: Continue working backward in this manner until you’ve identified the very first milestone that has to be met.

Example: First you need to clarify the website’s purpose, the webpages’ scope, and have a complete sitemap. 


6. Create Your SMART Goals

If your objectives aren’t SMART, you won’t be able to attain them. This is the best strategy on how to set goals and achieve them successfully.

If you’re unfamiliar with SMART objectives, these are goals that are:

Specific:

Be very clear about your goal. Setting imprecise goals that don’t accomplish anything is pointless. 

Example: “to design a website in three months.” 

Measurable:

It’s essential to monitor the success or fulfillment of a certain goal after you’ve set one.

Example: “This will be accomplished by hiring two graphic designers and one web programmer.” 

Attainable:

A SMART goal has to be attainable. To help you develop achievable objectives, use data, analytics, and research.

Example: “Using their skills and my own understanding, I’ll achieve my goal of having a functioning website up and running before the official debut. This will be accomplished by investing 5 hours every week on my website.” 

Relevant:

Any goals set for teams or individuals must be related to the company’s overall objectives.

Example: “The first step in starting my own business will be to develop and create my own website.”

Time-bound:

Time-bound goals are required. Setting a deadline for a simple activity too far in the future or an unreasonably short deadline for anything difficult and time-consuming is not productive.

Example: “Given my tasks, I’ve got 3 months to complete this. At this rate, I should work for roughly 60 hours.”
