Frugal Living Blog Case Study
Let’s look at the example of a Frugal Living blog, in the popular finance niche, to see how this strategy works.
1. Start with Your Seed Keywords
To start our research let’s use seed keywords to find a blog post to write about that’s popular and low competition.
First up, come up with one of the seed keywords for your blog. These are 1-2 words that capture the essence of your niche.
How to Find Your Seed Keywords
- Brainstorm a list of keywords that are relevant to your niche
- Look at Google Trends to see what topics are trending in your niche
- Look at Social Media and Forums to see what questions people are asking and what issues they’re discussing in your chosen niche
The seed keywords for our blog about Frugal Living, are frugal living, saving money tips, budget-friendly recipes, DIY projects, debt management, minimalism, budget tips, living below your means, coupons and deals, etc.
2. Find Blog Post Ideas Using the Alphabet Soup Method
Next, I’ve chosen the seed keyword ‘frugal living’ to start my research on this topic. Then take these next steps…
- Search Google and use the alphabet soup method with these keywords.
- This will show the questions your audience needs help with.
For example, in the Google search bar, I’ve searched for ‘what frugal living a’. Then ‘what frugal living b’ and on through the alphabet. You can also put the letter between the words, e.g. ‘what a frugal living’, ‘what b frugal living’, and on.
These results popped up below the search bar
- frugal living at 60
- what frugal living challenges
- simple living zen
- What’s the best example of frugal living
- living frugal tips
- how to save money frugal living
- how to live a frugal life
Click on one of the results you find. I clicked on ‘how to save money frugal living’ as a potential blog post and looked down on the results page at the competition…
3. Who is Your Competition?
Now we need to check the status of our competition. Do a Google Search with your blog post title.
Do you see big websites that spend millions on creating content? If so, this is too competitive, move on to one of your other blog post ideas.
Too Competitive!
Reader’s Digest and Yahoo are big companies with heavy wallets, so this is too competitive.
4. Look for Forums for Less-Competitive Results
I’ve chosen one of the other keyword phrases we found with the Alphabet Soup method – ”What’s the Best Example of Frugal Living.”
On the Google results page, I can see Quora and smaller blogs, so this is less competitive and a good idea for a blog post.
Hello Quora!
Do you see forums and Quora on the results page? Yay! Since these are lower competition results, this keyword will more likely get you on page 1.

5. Look at the ‘People Also Ask’ Section
Now we want to come up with the sub-headings and content for our blog post. So let’s do three things:
- Look at Google’s ‘People Also Ask’
- See what your competition is writing about
- Look at the forums
For example, staying on the same Google results page look at the ‘People Also Ask’ and the ‘Related Searches’ sections.
- What are people asking?
- What are their problems?
- What do they need help with?
You’ll use these as your sub-headings.
Also, check out your competition and see what information and inspiration you find there (without copying their content).
Finally, check forums, e.g. Quora, and search for the problems people need help with.

6. Create your Outline
Now you have plenty of sub-headings that people are searching for. So, it’s much easier to write a paragraph or two for each one. Especially if each is a question.
Not only is it easier for you to answer the questions, but the question/answer format statistically keeps your audience on the page longer.
It also creates trust with your audience. Here’s what the website, Just Publishing Advice says:
Using questions in blog writing creates intrigue and interest for your readers. They involve your readers and give answers that add value.
Time to Start Writing
So, let’s say you have 10 sub-headings. It’s easy to come up with 120 words for each paragraph. All up this gives you 1,200 words.
Plus your introduction and conclusion. You’re at a 1,500 blog post without realizing it!
Next come up with a captivating blog post title to hook your audience (I use Bard, ChatGPT, and Writesonic to generate great titles).
Tell the World!
Rinse and repeat this process to speed up your content writing. Head to social media and promote your blog posts each time you publish.
Plus add each post’s URL to Google’s URL Inspection Tool and Bing’s URL Inspection Tool and get indexed much quicker.
Extra Tips to Turbocharge Your Writing
- Google now looks for blog posts that include a personal angle. So don’t be afraid to use ‘I’ in your content.
- Make your content easy to read and avoid big blocks of text.
- Write small paragraphs of 1-2 sentences, so you have plenty of white space.
- Add images and lists to add visual appeal to the page.
- You’ve spent a lot of time on your blog post, it may not be perfect but give yourself a deadline and hit publish. Stop dawdling! I tend to publish and then edit on my phone. For some reason, I can see any glaring mistakes then!
How to Write Blog Content Quickly
