What’s a Niche?
A niche is basically carving out an audience by choosing to be a big fish in a little pond instead of a small fish in a giant lake of an overall topic like finance.
So, your niche here might be financial advice. You’ve narrowed the topic of finance to a more specific subject from finance to financial advice.
You can see the number of people searching these topics through your keyword research and a few other techniques which I explain further on…
So, your niche is your audience and a topic that you’ll enjoy spending months writing about. When you do your keyword research, you’ll find lots of low-competition keywords.
Low-competition keywords are keywords that help you generate organic traffic quickly on Google. This also means you’re gaining authority as you rank.
Focus on identifying your target audience, communicating an authentic message that they want and need and project yourself as an “expert” within your niche.

Choose a Sub-Niche
You can use your experiences, interests and unique perspective on life to choose a niche within a niche, called a sub-niche. These usually have more than one word and have less competition (big fish/little pond!)
For example, we’ve narrowed down the topic of Finance to Financial Advice and now to the sub-niche Financial Advice for Retirees or Financial Advice for Small Business Owners. See how we’ve also narrowed the focus to a targeted audience.
For example, Insomnia is a highly competitive niche, so let’s try the sub-niches:
‘how to cure insomnia, or ‘how to cure insomnia naturally, or ‘how to cure insomnia in women.’ These have good traffic with low competition.
Interested in skincare? How about ‘skincare for men in outdoor work’, or ‘skincare for women over 60’.
Interested in relationships? Think about the online dating niche for older singles. These keyword phrases are all low competition but still attract traffic:
- online dating for those over 40
- online dating for those in their 30s
- online dating for men over 50
- dating tips for men over 50
- online dating for women over 50
- dating sites for women over 50
One tip that helps when choosing untapped niche markets, is picking one from an evergreen topic. This topic will always be relevant to readers, like health. People will always be interested in living a healthier life.
You could also choose a sub-niche that doesn’t specify the target audience but leaves that open, for example, Bamboo and Organic Linen, Travel Clothing, and Weight Loss Smoothies. This also means you can broaden your niche over time and attract a wider audience.
Now let’s talk about some niche ideas to help you hit the ground running with your profitable blog.
1. Financial
This is one of the most profitable niches out there, but this also means it’s one of the most competitive.
How about starting a site that helps people repair their finances after a divorce or who plan to retire with very little savings?
There are many examples of income-earning websites on the internet. If you tailor a niche to your unique experiences, you’re sure to find success.
2. Fitness
This is another one of those evergreen niches that has seen massive growth over the past decade. With a bit of digging, you can find untapped niche markets.
There are many ways to niche down in the fitness industry.
How about exercises to alleviate back pain? Exercises for people who’ve had hip and knee replacements? Mountain Biking in your area?
Staying healthy and living a pain-free life is on the mind of most people, and basing a business on fitness can last a long time but keep your information fresh.
3. Debt Settlement
It is not a secret that many people are dealing with different forms of debt. This can significantly bog down people and add unnecessary stress, for example for people who want to buy a house, have children, travel, or are getting close to retirement age.
Information centered around helping people work towards a debt-free life will garner interest.
4. Makeup
This industry shows growth on google trends, and the interest is strong year-round. You’ll see seasonal variations in the types of makeup women wear in summer compared to winter. For example, in summer foundations with sunscreen are popular, and light bright eye shadow colors.
This is also a niche where economic conditions really don’t matter. People are going to spend money buying makeup.
As people age, they get more concerned about skincare and fighting mother time as long as possible.
How about makeup for women with sensitive skin? Makeup for women over 60? Check out Amazon’s wide range of makeup (#ad) – you could promote these products, and the beauty of Amazon is that your customers might buy other products on Amazon too!
Even though it’s easy to pick up makeup at the local mall, some people want specialized solutions for their personal situations, so there’ll always be an opportunity to help women with their makeup online.
5. Weight Loss
Like the reasons for makeup, people will always be concerned with looking good. With more and more processed food entering people’s diets, this industry will always have those looking for help to lose weight.
You could quickly build an affiliate site or blog promoting informational products helping people over 50 keep the pounds off, or how about healthy green smoothies for people in their 20’s?
A search on the Affiliate Network ShareaSale shows 54 merchants who offer weight loss products and programs, from shakes, to organic, to matcha tea, to Keto, to powders, natural pills, gourmet meals, and more!
You could combine affiliate programs from weight loss with those from the fitness niche to grow your audience even more extensively.
6. Insurance
Selling insurance is competitive but I’ve found travel insurance is a successful niche.
You’re selling someone financial protection against something that might happen, making it an unusual niche, but it’s something people might not necessarily want to think about but should!
So, as an affiliate, it’s your job to highlight the benefits of insurance. Helping people find the insurance that is right for them would be appreciated by your readers, and that is how you build a loyal audience.
7. Cryptocurrencies
Cryptocurrency is one of the most disruptive financial market forces we have ever seen. Since this is a relatively new market overall, finding untapped niche markets may be more straightforward.
And even though you’ve all seen Bitcoin shoot up and then fall flat, cryptocurrency is here to stay. Over the last year or so, Bitcoin has risen considerably.
It is almost universal that people invest more conservatively as they age, but why not be that go-to person to help older generations understand it? Google trends tell us that interest is only growing.
You would be helping educate, and teach how to avoid the pitfalls. There is also some great affiliate offers related to cryptocurrency.
8. Investing
With the rise of retail investors, more and more people are joining the market every day.
This is without the guidance of stockbrokers and financial advisors, just people with an iPhone and a dream. As we discussed with cryptocurrency, young investors may be more enthusiastic while older investors may be more conservative. But this doesn’t mean they don’t want to play the game at all.
Provide meaningful information to new traders, and your affiliate offers will thank you.
9. Nutrition
Have you ever heard anyone say this “When I was younger, I could eat anything, but now if I even look at a donut, I gain 5 pounds,”
Well, this is why nutrition will always make money, and if you niche down, you can gain an audience that will be engaged forever.
This one will require you to keep up with new trends to keep your content fresh, but hard work in this niche will always pay dividends.
You can see how I do keyword research for 5 Ingredient Healthy Recipes in How to Make Money over the Internet.
10. Diabetes
This is a disease that many are suffering from, but it’s just one of many that people need help with.
As long as you become an authority on a topic that people need help with, you will always have visitors to your sites.
Niching your information down even further to the sub-niches, “diabetes in young mothers”, or ”dealing with diabetes over 50” will help you gain a loyal audience.
11. Law of Attraction
In recent years, there has been a massive uptick of people connecting with their spiritual side. Google Trends shows a sharp rise in this niche.
Many skeptics dismiss it, but there’s logic to it. Having a positive mindset means good things will come your way.
Many affiliates and information programs deal with the law of attraction and other spiritual lines of thought. On ShareaSale you’ll see affiliate programs about mindfulness, mind coaches, health and wellbeing to name a few.
Why not niche down for older people who are interested in this philosophy?
12. Digital Products and Recurring Commissions
The beauty of digital products is that their commissions are generous and some have a recurring income. So you’ll be paid for years to come…now that’s passive income!
For example, travel commissions can be as low as 2% while Aweber (E-mail Marketing) offers 30% to 50% depending on the number of referrals you send their way for the life of the account. So that’s a fantastic incentive to promote that program!
Here’s a List of Programs with Recurring Commissions:
- Wealthy Affiliate – teaches you how to create your own online business
- Aweber – manages your e-mail campaigns (free and pro plans)
- Thrive Themes – popular WordPress theme
- ClickFunnels – sales funnel builder for websites
- LeadPages – landing pages software
- Lasso – manages your affiliate links all in one place and you can create cool link displays
- ConvertKit – e-mail marketing and landing pages

- Semrush – keyword research
You can sign up for individual affiliate programs, for example, Aweber run their own advocate program. But you can also sign up to networks like Shareasale who host a large number of digital advertisers, like Weebly the website creator platform.
Clickbank is a Popular Network:
- Clickbank is a digital marketplace that specializes in selling e-books, software, and other digital products.
- They’ve paid out more than $5 billion to affiliates to date!
- It’s one of the largest affiliate networks, with a range of affiliate programs.
- The network has a wide variety of products, with something to appeal to almost every niche.
- Clickbank has a very user-friendly interface, making it easy to find and purchase products.
- Most products on Clickbank have a 60-day money-back guarantee, so customers can feel confident about their purchases.

The goal is to find a niche that has some competition but is not entirely overcrowded. Niches with very low competition usually indicate a low potential for monetization and profitability.

1. GOOGLE TRENDS:
You can search Google Trends for niche ideas and topics you’re interested in. Search for a year and see how the topic is trending on the graph over this time.
- If the topic has seasons (you’ll see the peaks and troughs in certain seasons)

- You’ll also see the list of subregions where the topic is the most popular
- You’ll see related queries and related topics. These could be sub-niches or keyword ideas.

2. AMAZON AND EBAY:
You might choose a wonderful niche but then discover, after a lot of work, there’s no market or money in this niche! So, first, make sure there’s a profitable market.
Look at Amazon, search for products and read the reviews. Is this product popular? Is there a solid audience? Look at the value of the products too – if they’re cheap then your commission may be too small.
For example, in the solar niche, you could promote solar panels that cost thousands of dollars or solar lights which can cost $10! Which commission would you prefer?
You can do this by checking out Amazon’s popular product lists and see what people are buying. What’s hot or what’s not?! Here’s a link to Amazon’s Best Sellers which is updated hourly (#ad). Also, look at books and read the Table of Contents page – are there any ideas for niches there?
Understand your customer, their needs, and desires. What products and services will help them?
3. SEARCH RESPONSE TOOL:
This free tool, Search Response People Also Ask Tool, gives you great insight into what people are searching and what questions they’re asking Google. Search your niche topic here and see what help people need.
Tip: You’ll find the question-and-answer articles on your blog are low competition and easier to rank for. For example, How to grow Cactus and Succulents? How to grow a Lemon Tree from seed? How do you Exfoliate your Body?
Question-based content has a bigger chance of squeezing into Google’s featured answers or the so-called “position 0” results.

4. ANSWER THE PUBLIC:
Answer the Public is another great tool that generates questions from your niche idea and keywords. You’ll be given an incredible number of niche ideas, keywords, and content ideas as questions (who, what, where, when, how) and prepositions (in, at, on, of, to), comparisons, and alphabetical lists.

You can search for a niche with Jaaxy here (requires a sign up which is free):

Why not join some of the affiliate networks, including Clickbank, CJ, Shareasale, Flexoffers, and Travelpayouts, and look at their high-performing products and services? Do any of these sound like a niche you could run with?

Why not go straight to the source! Google Stream is run by Google but also gives results by Bing. It offers hundreds of keyword/niche results, competition scores, cost per click, and you can upload directly to Google ads. Look into the mind of Google and see what keywords you should aim for.
